Recently I've been receiving an ever-growing number of e-mails asking me what kind of apps I use on my Mac. Continue reading for a list and a brief explanation.

Good apps are hard to find... Or are they? Here's a list of some of (my) most used and treasured apps installed on my Mac. I use these apps on a daily basis - some even hundreds of times.

Let's get to it...

1Password (commercial)
Get it at Mac Appstore
Ever wished you could remember all the passwords used on all you favorite websites? How often have you clicked that "forgot my password" button? Now, with 1Password, you'll never have to remember a single password anymore (actually that's not totally true - you still have to remember one master password). This app even integrates with Dropbox so you can access your passwords from multiple Macs or Windows machines and even has apps for iPhone and iPad.

Growl (commercial)
Get it at Mac Appstore
Growl is the notification system that Apple "forgot" when they designed the UI in OS/X. Up until recently this app has been freeware but for whatever reason it's now commercial. However, this app is SO good (and the price so low) that you just can't live without it!

Transmit (commercial)
Get it at Mac Appstore
Transmit is the best designed (I sincerely mean that!) and most feature-packed FTP client out there for Mac. It has everything you'd expect from a first-class FTP-client and then a bit more... Try the 30 days trial and see for yourself!

Adium X (free)
Read more and get it here
Adium X is an all-in-one instant message client. Keep all your online contacts in one place as group the just as you like. Adium X connects to Twitter, MSN Messenger, AOL, Facebook Chat, Google Chat and much much more. Easy to download themes and sounds - Have it YOUR way. A must-have!

Quicksilver (free)
Read more and get it here
Quicksilver is properly the app that I use the most each day. QS is an application launcher (and so much more) and while I don't like to have my dock in OS/X cluttered with apps QS provides me an awesome way to launch an app in an instant. Once you've used it a couple of times you start to wonder why Apple haven't integrated this into OS/X (no, it's NOT the same as Spotlight!).

Reeder (commercial)
Get it at Mac Appstore
If you love RSS-feeds just as much as I do you'd LOVE Reeder. It's an awesome app that reads your Google Reader feeds in a great and intuitive way. Easy to use and even easier to manage. Oh.. The VERY cool thing is that you can also get the iPhone or/and iPad app and continue reading your feeds (not having to read the ones you already read again).

That's really it. If you think I left something out (or forgot to mention some other cool apps) just drop me a line or throw in a comment below and I'll take a look at it. Thanks for reading!

Firefox 4 has been leaked for Mac and PC a day before the company said it would be officially available. Mozilla promises the user interface in Firefox 4 is sleeker and easier to use, and it enables users to keep open tabs, bookmarks, history, and passwords in sync with other devices running a Firefox browser.

Firefox 4 also has a new feature that allow you to drag and drop open tabs into groups that can be arranged and named. The leaked downloads aren’t available direct from Mozilla, so we suppose there’s still a chance the team could pull the launch date and issue an RC2 release, but we doubt it. We won’t keep you waiting, though, so hit the jump for a link to download Firefox 4 for PC or Mac.

Download Firefox 4 Final for Mac

Download Firefox 4 Final for Windows

After the longest beta known to humankind, Firefox 4 may actually be released next Tuesday, March 22, according to Mozilla's Senior Director of Platform Engineering Damon Sicore.

This update has been rife with delays, so we'll believe it when we see it, but as the browser's currently in the release candidate phase, it seems promising. Keep an eye out shortly thereafter for our head-to-head comparison of the newly released Firefox 4, Internet Explorer 9, and Chrome 10. It's like March is also sweeps for web browsers!

Adobe is ready with the Adobe Flash Player 10.2.152.26, which among other things, has sub-pixel rendering, so text appears clearer on the screen.

But perhaps the best news of the Adobe Flash Player 10.2.152.26 is an improved video acceleration that takes better advantage of graphics card and processor in certain new Intel Macs is much better.

This means, among other things, that CPU usage when playing 1080p Flash video are drastically reduced, from 90 percent load per cpu to only 20 percent per cpu.

Exactly the speed of Flash has long been a criticism of many Mac users, since Flash has often been regarded as to heavy and clumsy on the Mac.

You can download the new Flash Player from Adobe's website on the link below.

Latest Adobe Flash Player

Cydia coming to Mac

When it comes to jailbreaking, there's probably no name as familiar to the development community than that of Jay 'saurik' Freeman. Jay is the brain behind the Cydia App Store, and this morning he gave the attendees of 360|MacDev an overview of his upcoming jailbreak store for Mac OS X, cycript, and Cydia Substrate. Continue reading for more...

Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.

Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available "within weeks." With today's news that the Mac App Store will not support in-app purchases, something that is critical to the freemium app model that is so successful in the iOS world, a Mac Cydia might be just the web store for a number of Mac developers.

Before discussing the Mac Cydia, however, Freeman spent quite a while taking Apple to task for their horrible developer documentation and for the restrictions that are common in the Apple development world. He foresees many of Apple's restrictions moving to the Mac App Store.

Developers who are interested in getting their products into Mac Cydia were told to contact an employee at patrick at saurikit.com for further details.

A new exploit called the SHAtter Jailbreak will allow all iOS users including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPad, iPad 3G, and iPod touch to jailbreak their mobile devices for life. This is BIG news for those that jailbreak their iDevices. With SHAtter, the jailbreak community will always have their jailbreak. Apple won’t be able to patch the SHAtter jailbreak exploit, and the cat and mouse game with Apple and jailbreakers will most likely end.

According to a page on The iPhone Wiki, the SHAtter jailbreak is the first exploit in the S5L8930 that will allow unsigned code execution to create a tethered jailbreak for life, and as an initial vector for all new untethered exploits to come. The SHAtter jailbreak vulnerability, exploitation and payload were created by pod2g and posixninja. No release date for the SHAtter jailbreak download has been announced yet.

The next version of iTunes, available today, includes Ping, a social music discovery tool that allows users to follow friends and artists, helping customers to discover and share new music. Continue for more information.

It's sort of like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said of the entirely new Ping service. He described it as a social network all about music, built in to the new iTunes, now available for download.

The product is based on discovery, allowing users to see what their friends are listening to and what concerts they're going to.

Users can choose to "follow" artists, as well as their friends, and iTunes will populate a customized top 10 list that represents what their friends are downloading. Users can also see concerts that are coming near them, and inform their friends that they will be attending.

Ping will be open to over 160 million customers, who can sign up immediately. It will also be available to iPhone and iPod touch users through the existing iTunes Store.

iTunes 10 will also ship with a new logo, which Jobs joked reflects the fact that by next Spring, Apple is expected to surpass all CD sales in the U.S. The new iTunes logo dispenses of the CD that was previously featured, and only includes a musical note.

Jobs also demonstrated a new "hybrid" view within iTunes 10, which automatically displays album art when there are five or more tracks from the same record.

iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we’re adding social networking with Ping

Jobs said in a press release.

With Ping you can follow your favorite artists and friends and join a worldwide conversation with music’s most passionate fans.

Apple on Tuesday released Snow Leopard Graphics Update, a patch for Mac OS X 10.6 that is said to improve performance and reliability of popular titles like StarCraft II and Portal. Continue reading for more information.

The 69.2MB update was released by Apple Tuesday afternoon. It is available from the company's support site, or via Software Update. It requires Mac OS X 10.6.4.

According to Apple, the software update contains performance and stability fixes for graphics applications, including fixes that:

address frame rate issues occurring in Portal and Team Fortress 2 on certain Macs

resolve an issue that could cause aperture 3 or StarCraft II to unexpectedly quit or become unresponsive.

The update addresses framerate issues on the titles Portal and Team Fortress 2 for the late 2009 and mid 2010 iMac and Mac mini; early 2009 Mac Pro; early 2009 and mid 2010 MacBook; and mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15- and 17-inch models.

The update also resolves an image corruption issue that may occur when disconnecting and reconnecting external displays while the system is running.

Valve, the maker of Portal, Team Fortress 2 and the Steam gaming client for Mac, said in June that it was working with Apple to improve the performance of games running in Mac OS X. The company said that improved drivers from Apple would have the greatest impact on performance.

We are making a lot of progress identifying specific issues that need work inside the game and inside OpenGL and drivers

Rob Barris of Valve said at the time...

Apple, ATI and Nvidia are all involved.

Apple on Wednesday patched a PDF exploit found in its mobile devices with iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and iPod touch, and iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad. Continue reading for more information.

The updates address a security hole used by hackers to "jailbreak" the iPhone, iPod touch. The PDF exploit could also be used by hackers to gain remote control over an iOS device.

iOS 4.0.2 is available for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and second- and third-generation iPod touch models. iOS 3.2.2 is for the iPad and iPad 3G.

Earlier this month, users released a browser-based hack that took advantage of a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari. The hack could allow users to run unauthorized code on their iOS devices through a process known as jailbreaking.

The jailbreak takes advantage of a PDF exploit that one prominent security expert called "scary." By tricking a user into simply visiting a website and loading corrupted PDFs through the iOS browser, a hacker could take control of an iOS device.

Apple quickly responded after the hack was made public, and said that it had already developed a fix for the issue. It said the PDF exploit would be plugged with a forthcoming update, which was released Wednesday in the form of iOS 4.0.2 and iOS 3.2.2.

Download via iTunes.

Jailbreakme.com is back! For those not in the know, jailbreakme.com was by far the easiest and quickest way to jailbreak your iPhone and iPod touch running the 1.1.1 firmware a few years ago. Continue to read for instructions on jailbreak.

You visited it on your device, tapped a button and less than a minute later your device was jailbroken. The site had since gone defunked since 1.1.1, as new methods to jailbreak were found, especially the epic pwnage method.

comex has opened the site back up for all iDevices running 4.0/4.0.1, including the iPhone 4. So jailbreak away guys.

Note: Reports came in that if you have issues to reboot a few times.

Note 2: This jailbreak method will likely NOT work when 4.1 goes public.

Note 3: If you require hacktivation, follow sharif_hashim’s phonebook SIM video to activate if you want to use this jailbreak. Otherwise you cannot use this jailbreak.

Note 4: If you are having MMS/FT issues, do:

chmod 755 /private/var/mobile/Library
chmod 755 /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences

Then “Reset Network Settings”

Note 5: The Cydia update resolves the MMS/FT issue. If you still don’t see FT, check your phone preferences anf enable FT.

The next bug fix and maintenance release for Apple's Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard operating has progressed through the company's internal verification process and will soon make its way to developers for broader testing. Continue reading for more information.

People familiar with the matter say a limited number of developers are expecting the first external pre-release builds of Mac OS X 10.6.5 over the next 48 hours. A wider release accessible to all paid Apple developers could come as early as this weekend.

Though it's unclear just yet what enhancements Apple's planning to incorporate into the release, graphics driver and OpenGL performance is expected to remain a priority in 10.6.5, as it has in previous Snow Leopard updates.

After installing Mac OS X 10.6.4, released last month, users began reporting an assortment of graphics issues ranging from choppy video performance to sporadic corruption issues within Safari.

For their part, game makers Blizzard and Valve have both suggested that graphics issues related to some of their newer titles may be due to changes in the OpenGL implementation that shipped as part of Mac OS X 10.6.4.

It's still propagating in iTunes.

The iOS software update shows slightly changed signal bars with the first three being taller in size. In many places, users have noticed that their service appears to be 1-3 bars lower than before the change.

Download via iTunes.

Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.

To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.

To install the profile:
Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.

Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.
A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now.
Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.

Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.

After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

iOS 4 Exchange Mail, Contacts, or Calendars may not sync after update

It's been possible for Mac users to dual-boot into Windows to get access to their favourite online games such as Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and many more - But as of May 12th 2010 Mac users can run these games natively directly from within OSX.

The Mac OS version of Valve's digital distribution platform Steam will be released on May 12, the company last night confirmed,

Valve today announced the public release of Steam for the Mac is May 12. The street artist ('space invader'), Banksy, is starring in a new documentary about the way he works and about the space invader culture. Continue reading for more information.

I've spoken about Banksy before so I reckon that most of you reading this already knows about him. In short - Banksy is one of the best (in my opinion) street artists in the world. The englishman just have a way of grabbing his audience with his work and his selection of places.

And now...
He's going to take us on a journey into his world and the culture of the 'space invaders' through the eyes and lenses of French film enthusiast Thierry Guetta.

Details about the movie are still quite slim but starring Banksy and produced by Thierry Guetta simply makes this film a 'must-see' for all sub-culture fans - young or old.

The film debuts in cinemas across United States since April 16th. As of now there's no words on when it's gonna hit the European movie theaters - hopefully very soon.

Banksy Film

Banksy website
