Maria asked me earlier tonight how she could disable the online presence on Facebook so people weren't able to see that she's online. Continue reading to find the answer.
Since Facebook launched its 2nd version a few months back, they introduced a new feature - online chat and indication of presence (located in the lower right corner of your browser when you're in Facebook).
However nice this new feature is - it also allows your online "friends" to see if you're online. Some people might not like this So here's how to (almost) disable it.
Basically, the simple way is NOT to disable it but set your status as "offline". Facebook saves this information in a file located on your computer (called a "cookie") and remembers it. Not forever but until the cookie expire (and it will after a few days) or until you change your status back to "online". When the cookie expires - simply follow the same steps mentioned here to set it to "offline" again.
Do change your status just do this.
Locate the "Chat" preferences in the lower right of your browser
Change your status to "offline"You're set!
I'm aware off the fact that this is not "disabling per-say" but it does give you the same result as if. Facebook has been so kind NOT to present users with an option to disable the feature on their site through the general settings.
If someone know of any better way to do this please let me know.
